1981 P Nickel, Small Mintmark? - Coin Community Forum

invisibleninja7 Valued Member United States 91 Posts	Posted 02/02/2011 7:21 pm I found a 1981 P Nickel today but when I looked at the mint mark something was off. It was less than half of the size it should be, far smaller than would be used on any other coin. It's barely recognizable as a P with the naked eye, it looks more like a curd at first glance. Anyone have an idea what it could be, why it could be like this. Sorry no pics again, but me and my 14.1 MP camera can't come to terms At the moment. Report this Post to the Staff

Dave42 Pillar of the Community United States 571 Posts	Posted 02/03/2011 09:46 am How does the mint mark size compare to other 1981 nickles that you have? I ask because the mintmark punch used in the early 80's was pretty small, and most of the mintmarks I see on nickels from that time are usually small, blurry, blobs. I think it was around 1985 that they changed the style of mintmark punch and the result was a much larger clearer mintmark. Then in 1990 they switched to placing the mintmark directly on the master die, so no more use for punches, resulting in a precisely placed easy to see mintmark. Hope this helps!
