Metal Polishing Creme Safe To Use? - Coin Community Forum

xxxxmadnessxxxx Valued Member United States 69 Posts	Posted 09/26/2006 02:28 am i recently found a metal polishing creme at a local Walgreens on clearance, so I purchased it out of curiousity, hoping it would clean up some of my coins. Normally, polishing cremes contain both acid and some kind of fine abrasive, like silica - both of which should be kept off your valuable coins. I also have 500+ 39-55 Jeffersons, dozens of 45-64 silver quarters and dimes, and bag fulls of wheaties. most of my collection is pulled from the register I work. I personally would never clean a coin either, but that's just because I am too inexperienced. However, polish is almost always abrasive on some level and therefore brings down the value of a coin drastically. Report this Post to the Staff

Seriously, Madness, polishing/cleaning a nice group of coins like in the pics ruins them for most collectors...I advise leaving them as is in the future, especially as it seems you have a magic cash drawer...those are some serious circulation finds in this day and age! I was refering to the thousands of wheaties, war time nickels, and silver quarters/dimes. the standing liberty, the Barber quarter, the buffalo's, the silver quaters in the picture, and 2 of the Mercury dimes were actually found, some from my register, and some from other numerous places. the better condition'd Peace dollar was one I recently purchased from a friend, and the other I inherited from my great-grandfather's collection. the Indian cents were all inherited also, but were in protective coverings that I am in the middle of replacing. the V nickel and the capped bust were recently given to me from a friend. he had a garage sale and wanted to get rid of some things. knowing I was a coin collector, he gave me his small collection. as for the polishing. as stated before, I only polished some junk pocket change - its why I asked on the forums if it was safe. I questioned why people wouldn't do it if it made your coins look that nice. I think partly the reason for the coins in the picture looking polished is because of the abnormal lighting. unfortunately, my room has poor overhead lighting so I was using a blue led light from a 25x magnifier attached to my desk. thanks for the responses.
