I am guessing VF for this one--but I am also wondering if it would get by as "problem free," despite the discoloured bump around the obverse rim at 9:00 (it is a minor rim ding) and minor marks above her nose. There is no lettering readable on this coin's edge, sadly. Is this coin worth sending in or will it be branded with "PCGS Genuine" in scarlet letters? Edited by Adam590 03/19/2011 9:41 pm

This is a beauty, don't have mu Overton with me at the moment so I can't give you the variety. With the die cracks and worn dies, I would give this a grade of EF-40.

I'd go EF-40 on this one too. The reverse is definitely stronger than the obverse.

Nice CBH!! I would give it a VF-35. My limited CBH Overton determination ability thinks this coin is an Overton 104a (R-1) Here's a copy of okbustchaser's O-104a from Coinzip: What do you all think?

Moe, thanks for IDing the Overton variety here--I think the picture slightly underplays the discoloration on what it is a SMALL rim bump around 9 o'clock. I wonder if I should submit this to PCGS? I don't want to do it if they will most likely give it a "Genuine" label instead of a proper grade.

Your attribution of O-104A is correct Moe...

Thanks for your grades. I took this to a dealer with other coins I wanted to consider sending out for TPG. Two representatives concurred that the half dollar is a "Problem Coin" given the scratch from Liberty's eye down her cheek. I didn't think that would be a huge problem. Are they right?

I do think the scratch would qualify as a problem for PCGS. It is in the worst possible location and is unfortunately highly visible and distracting. I expect they would "genuine" the coin on that account.

Genuine due to obverse damage, sorry man.

I agree that it would probably grade "Genuine" due to the scratch. I've seen less damage get the details grade.

Before I read any of the comments, the scratch immediately stood out to me as a problem so I believe it would be put in a Genuine holder. It is still a nice coin and there is a market for it.

What causes the half-circle on the obverse, that goes from the back of her head down to the bottom of the hair curls? Is that the earlier reference to a die crack? Is that something common to this year, or variety?

Jack B: Those are in fact the die cracks. Those, the originality, and the off center strike made me purchase this coin despite the scratch on the cheek. For some reason--this scratch never really bothered me.

I don't think vf would be a problem, maybe even xf, but that scratch is just too big and in the wrong place.
