In the Fall I submitted three coins to PCGS through a local dealer--it averaged $35/coin. I brought in 4 LESS VALUABLE coins today to the same dealer but was quoted $90/coin. Does this seem correct or crazy?

Sounds crazy to me. If this is a PCGS dealer, ask them for a break down on the cost. $35/coin is reasonable, $90/coin is nuts.

Agreed, with NGC, if you do the economy, it usually ends up at about $25/coin. $90 is ridiculous. How much are they worth, are they even worth it to get slabbed?

yes that is outrageous prices they are charging you. I am not sure why they would ever charge $90.00 a coin even if you were getting a variety attribution added to the label

At $90 a coin, you should become a PCGS member, submit them yourself and save some money :)

I did not end up doing it this time, as I thought 90/coin was not worth it. The coins are as follows: 1: An 1886-S Half Eagle. I am guessing it could grade anywhere from a 61-63. To stamp the 62 or 63 on it would be worth it so that if I ever do try and sell it, dealers won't try to buy it as an AU(58). I DO want to see this one in plastic! 2. An 1825/4 Quarter. I posted it on the grading forum a few days ago--if it got a VF(20) I'd be thrilled. If it got a F(15) I wouldn't cry. 3. An 1861-O Seated half dollar. This coin would probably get somewhere between a 50 and a 55. Maybe a 53. 4. An 1808 Half Cent (check end of early copper thread) that could get from a VF(20) to a VF(30) I think. What should I do if I can not find local dealers (in St. Louis) that want to send the coins in for me and this is a one time thing where I do not really want to become a member? |

And Bryan: Yeah--it is crazy, and it just ordinary grading. The store said it was for insurance, mailing, and increased grading fees. They have a sheet with their prices, which I didn't feel like calling "BS" on out loud. I simply pointed out that they sent in 3 of my coins in the Fall for $35/coin and everything was great. They kind of shrugged and said that they don't make money on this and that it is just a service for collectors--my allergy to BS started to pulse in my veins so I didn't drag it out.

Adam590 you should name this dealer. They are not allowed to charge those type of rates for submitting coins if they are a PCGS dealer.

I still have a voucher for 4 coins to be graded by PCGS that I have never used. If you join PCGS it would be less money than they want to charge you and you would get the voucher for 4 free coins graded

Join the PCGS Collectors Club and forget the dealers. That's what I did. Direct submission privileges.

Its mark up and profit gouging for that dealer, no question about it. I went through the same thing in Rockville, MD with a dealer. He wanted to charge me ridiculous amounts to send in.
I kept asking around and found a great guy up in Frederick, MD, Mike D., who sent them in to NGC for me, at cost only. Great guy!!

Wow I was wanting to get some of mine graded. I was not really sure how. So it sounds like direct to PCGS is the way to go?

I understand if a dealer wants to charge a small fee for the service because there is some extra work and risk involved, but $90 per coin is crazy.
Like others have stated, I would just join PCGS directly and submit them yourself. I'm a member and I like not having to rely on someone else to submit my coins.

Biokemist: It is Scotsman. I do not wish to slander or insult them, as the people can be nice, helpful, and I have bought some coins at good prices from them. I really don't understand their new sheet with TPG prices. Where is St. Louis do you like to go? |

Everyone else: Thanks for your suggestions. I will look into submitting them to PCGS and NGC on my own.
