1642I am never comfortable taking pictures of small coins, so I was hoping someone else would step up, but as we cannot stop now - here is my lone 1642. A 2 skilling Norway. It is just 13mms in diameter.

The (1647) 4 Mark of Queen Christina is interesting...the die work on the bust it quite a departure from the previous years; the engraver doesn't look as experienced.
It's great seeing detail in such a small 2 Skilling! In its day, would be an easy coin to lose, if one wasn't careful with their money.

Back in those times, that tiny coin might cover a week's expenses. Provided incentive to not lose it.

Thanks Litotes and 10xloupe! 1641 Sweden1/4 Riksdaler of Christina. In my experience the quarter riksdalers of Sweden are much harder to find than the riksdalers or half riksdalers.

About a year after I aquired the 1641 quarter riksdaler I discovered a picture my coin, in Coins of Sweden (pdf), a very interesting and informative reference by David Ruckser.

Yes it has a distinctive look to it. There is another picture of this coin and discussions about it in 1647 Sweden 4 Mark Queen Christina.

One interesting point we don't think about is how denominations weren't always marked. That comes from the days when coins were valued by what they were, not by what some gubmint claimed they were.
