Quote: t360, I am sort of awed by your ability to fill out the years of the 17th. century with great coins one after the other. Am curious as to how long you have been pursuing this hobby. Thanks mysilveryears. I started as a kid and then got busy with other things in life until about 15 years ago. The European coins of this time period are most interesting to me.

Today I ordered some Verdi-Care from Wizard Coin Supply to see if I can remove that small patch of verdigris on the 1634 1/4 ore.

Quote: "The European coins of this time period are most interesting to me." Here's a 1632 thaler from Augsburg, German States, under Swedish occupation. Size= 42mm; has a removed jewelry loop, most definitely some cleaning, and also environmental damage (appears to have been in a fire). Who cares.. it was a bargain. It's a one year type. It looks MUCH better in hand. A similar-condition example without the above three problems would retail ~ $1000. The date is so de-emphasized, it's inclusion almost seems like an afterthought, as if the engravers were looking for somewhere to hide it among the regal details. Thread is moving faster through the 1600's than it did when we were in the 1700's! Awesome! Thalers, daalers, dog-dollars or whatever.. keep them coming!

Breathtaking coin t360. Sigismund III Vasa was even the King of Sweden for a little while. I have some his groschens to show, just waiting for the right year.

That Sigismund thaler is the best of those I've seen. Smaller coins of that ruler are fairly plentiful, but the larger ones are elusive. That one is high on my wantlist! Here is my 1630, a Saxony Teutonic Knights thaler of John George. Size = 45mm; obviously cleaned, and probably polished in the obverse fields, a common practice in old European collections.

mysilveryears - Your Saxony thaler is struck up very nicely and shows good clear details on the reverse shield. It is an excellent example of a very complex and beautiful design.
