I'm a newcomer to collecting silver as well and am in it for the long haul. A short term price reduction only means that I can buy a little more than I might have bought otherwise. A price correction back to $25-30/oz. would be about perfect. Agreed!

I am in for the long run at age 37, and hope to retire before 80, as I don't know many productive 80 year old bartenders....
I am settin on 59 oz of silver, one oz short of 5 troy pounds, and that is not much in the bigger picture of things....
Even if silver hit 100 an oz and I said hey lets sell, and if I could get 1000 over spot for the entire bunch, as I have a good portion of nicer higher premium silver (which would be a huge if), then you would only have close to 7 grand. That is a lot of money, but no where the amount one would need to retire. Even when I hit 100 oz, probably around the time silver hits 100 an oz, that is still just over 10 grand, so to make a serious profit, I am gonna need a whole lot more, but hey I have years to add it, and at the pace I buy, I should be able to add around 100 oz a year, or at least that is my long term plan....

I'm rolling up on 36 next month and like you, I would like to see retirement. Given the economic condition of our country, I fear that unless MAJOR changes come soon, you and I and everyone else will be licking our collective wounds when we see what happens to our paper investments. Hence, the hedge with physical SILVER!

Do you go out and buy some bars or ingots, maybe online? Rolls of those ASE's, maybe? I was thinking that maybe I would go to my neighborhood guy, not that I actually know him, but he's been there for years, or possibly at the next monthly coin show in NH, and purchase like $2K worth of ASE's, just so I can experience the push and pull myself. Or maybe the angst!

Jack B, I did and do the most foolish of all, as I did not read any books (Humans have to make everything more complicated than it needs to be, not me), charts, nothing. Simply decided I needed something new to buy on ebay, thought one night to hunt for silver and gold, saw the amount of money being spent on them on ebay, combined that with all the shops I saw buying gold. Figured I am good at selling on ebay, so why not buy silver and gold coins and bars in the form I like as I can re sale them when ever I like. Figuring others would like them as well in future re sale.... Sure, I see where you are coming from, but you got started some where at some point in life, figured coins collecting would be a good idea for whatever reason, or dealing, or whatever connections you have had to the pm's.... I am not gonna let the..."Ya got in to late, Or your not fast enough, Or big enough to play pro sports" sway me, as I am in it for the long haul, as I am a collector at heart, not investor, and just took a liking to silver and gold after first acquiring some. It is small, easy and low cost to ship compared to vintage collectibles I have bought an sold on ebay in the past, easy to hide, nice to look at, I can go on and on, lol...

Or maybe the angst!" - JackB I don't know how to do quotes, but I was wondering the same thing. Where to start. I didn't buy anything for a bit until I felt comfortable with all aspects of the industry and random variables. I started by going to a coin show first to LOOK and boy was that hard! The second coin show I attended I felt a lot better in terms of what I was looking for and I took $8,000 cash. I bought silver @ 35 and one ounce of gold just to have to the collection. It's a drop in the bucket compared to other members I've read and seen on YouTube. I'm still buying to this date and I have not ordered online yet. For me personally, I found my best deals were at shows or my local shops. I suggest to Google local dealers around your area and call them - compile a list and I put that on my Google Maps to optimize my coin "trip". I feel it is important to have a good dealer relationship (if possible) to get the best deals or items when they come in. Mine will call me time to time. I started investing in bullion bars and slowly am working my side to the coins / rounds. I am on the .999 silver bandwagon at the moment but a lot of people will advise for you to invest in 90% coins. Go with what makes you happy and educate yourself as much as possible. I am by no means an expert, but am simply giving you my experience & thoughts. I have some what started like you, and I still learn everyday. Good luck.

I don't know of a price that would make me part with my silver. My kids/grand kids will probably sell at the market price the day am in the ground.Oh well.

Or maybe the angst! - JackB The form can be pretty flexible. I started by buying a roll of 20 ASEs from APMEX. I checked their rep on-line and found many good comments. I also prowled their web site and liked what I saw there. After that, it was just a matter of "taking the plunge" with them. That purchase worked out really well, so I made a 2nd one about 3 weeks later. It is going well now too and I expect to receive it in about a week. This purchase is a roll of Kennedy half dollars and a roll of Roosevelt dimes. Both are in BU condition. For my next buy, I will be looking for some Walking Liberty half dollars. They are very nice as well but their condition must be fine or better. I enjoy looking at my small silver coin collection, so it is worth a premium to me to buy high quality coins, even if they are just bullion coins. I know that I could buy circulated coins for less money but I would not enjoy them as much as I do the BU class coins. On top of that, I also bought 200 shares of the SIVR silver ETF and 200 shares of Freeport-McMoran, a producer of copper and gold, in my Roth IRA. I am hoping to make some good money with that. Both of these should do well over the next several years. My wife and I are donating our Roths to the grand kids' education fund. They are ages 10 and 8 right now, so there is some time to build them up before they need the money.

I bought silver from $7.50 an ounce all the way up to $30.00 an ounce and my strategy was as soon as it doubled in price from what I paid for it I would sell and have done that up until now. It stayed around $7.50 for a few years once I started and took about 4 years to double that amount and once it did it dropped back down pretty fast back down to around $10.00 if I remember correct and hovered there for awhile before this last big run up so I have quite a stash of ASE's and silver bars that I haven't sold yet. I think I have about 500 or 600 ASE's in tubes in the SDB not to mention about 6 or 7 10 ounce bars that I am now going to hold onto for awhile to see what happens in the next few months

I don't think I'm selling, but if it goes over $50/oz and keeps going I may have to consider otherwise. If it goes north of $100 (which I doubt), I would consider since I'm saving for a new house.

Good call Ronpacheco4, as if we were a fly on his wall and heard...."sell the silver", it would be hard to not wanna make a move as well. All it takes is a few moves by the king pin players, and the whole thing could come crashing down eh....
And I started another thread about the big four silver figures, and it would make sense to think he must be one of the big four....

Wrong. Buffet sold his 130 million ounces at $12/oz long ago. A good portion was sold to back up the paper SLV. It was one of the few times Buffet sold on "Emotion" and got out too early.
