1847 Seated Dollar

What an awesome Sitting Liberty dollar! The Seated Liberty design is my favorite type! Did you inherit the coin slabbed or did you submit it after you inherited it?

WOW ...very nice coin. I really love the details/strike.

I too would have wondered about the look of the coin, but it is nice that it
came back with out a problem. Coins like these, are old enough to have
gone through a period when it was acceptable to clean coins. So the look
would have made it suspicious.

Of course in my experience, pictures (my pictures), most time do not show
how the coin really looks in hand.

I find it strange that dealers would hand the coin back and say not woreth much.
Even if this coin was cleaned it still would have good value, in the low XF price
if it was cleaned. My guess would be they just wanted to get the coin very cheap.

This type coin is one of the last two I need to complete my 7070 Dansco.
But may be higher price that I am looking to spend. I am more of a VF
budget for this Dansco spot.

Czar, I sent the coin in myself a few years ago.
I suggested it to him and he agreed. He himself had gotten
the coin collection from his brother after he had passed away.

BH, I figured right around that price (800/850)
I sold some other coins yesterday to a local dealer
and he offered me 750 for this one but I declined.
Overall now I guess the AU50 grade from anacs is fair.
I will be setting up some auctions on here along the way
but not sure how some of the coins will do because of the prices. I would rather have someone have a coin that they really want then worry about the best price I can get. Will find a middle ground somewhere on pricing.

The coin looks like it has nice detail (can't see the luster though) and probably is market acceptable as an AU. However, the dealer is absolutely correct. That coin was cleaned at one time. The question for grading companies is, is it market acceptable? ANACS said it was and put it in a good holder. However, PCGS/NGC might not agree with that and might put it in a details holder. However, large, older silver coins like that are many times seen in "good" holders even though they're white. It's extremely difficult to find older silver dollars that haven't been messed with and they often demand a premium.

Indian1, I have a LOT of coins in my collection like yours, so I'm not putting your coin down...please understand. I just want to convey some more information on this thread as your coin is a great illustration.

Here is an example of my 1847 Seated dollar that I doubt anyone would argue to its originality and you can see what I mean. I bought this as an XF45, but I've showed it around and the general feel is that this could get an AU grade.

about coins. As far as being cleaned who knows. It's been around a long time and I can only trace it back to the late
1800's as far as the owners go. The flip that it was in was getting pretty cruddy when I first saw it. Those spots I thought were grease at first. They are toned up some.
My problem with coins is my photos and scans. The dig. pics.
are horrible. Color is off and I tried to sharpen it with software. Made it worse :) I really looked at your coin and I think mine has slightly better detail. Your grade is correct.
On mine the rev. details are high AU. Obv. plus the spots/possible cleaning got it the 50. One thing I will state is that I believe anacs is more conservative than pcgs. I believed (and was nervous waiting:) that anacs would mark it cleaned if it was. Oh well, either way it is a done deal. I bet you could have 3 diff. graders from all 3
top TPG's and have 9 diff. opinions on this one :)or any coin for that matter. As far as price goes so far I have got (from a dealer) wholesale prices for some of the type coins that I have already sold. This one was the only one of two that he went below on. I do have to sell most of the coins that I did get in the collection so I guess here is a good place to start. Thanks all again for your input.

from him but seeing he treats me pretty well I will go back and see him next thursday or fri. He might even meet me half way or do the 800. Seemed like he wanted the coin himself. I looked on heritage for the heck of it. Their prices ranged a lot higher for some reason. 1200 to 1400. Maybe that's just an enticer to list with them. After seeing that I decided just for S's and Giggles :) to pop it up on ebay. Will let it sit there for 4 or 5 days. I have not had a listing there in a long while. I was looking at my feedback and laughing at some of the prices I sold silver and other coins for back then. If you could only keep everything ? Will most likely get no bites but thought

I guess I could try on here also after that if a no go with my dealer. Maybe someone would really like it for around the 750-800 price.

Those dealers were probably just trying to rip you off...
