I posted a link about wanting to purchase one of these yesterday, and got some good advice. I hope I didn't screw up. I know I wanted a slabbed one .. but I had to go Jbuck on this one. I went to one of the local coin shops to check out some UNC Jefferson nickels, hoping to upgrade a couple. But ended up getting 5 nickels and a 1997 Botanic Garden commemorative set .. also this 1914 D. From the ones I have been looking at this past week I think I did ok let me know what you think .. I picked it up for $230 and a no problem return agreement if I send it in and it comes back not with any problems. So now .. down to just one hole left in my Dansco 8100

Nice-looking cent with no obvious problems. I'm curious about the mintmark location, though. Is that one of the known positions for it? Don't think I've ever seen one that low and so close to Abe's coat.
Gradewise, this looks like F-15 or better.

The D mintmark on your coin looks suspicious to me, especially the location. I am unsure of different locations of the mintmark on a 1914 D, but here is a photo of a genuine 1914D taken from "The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents", By David W. Lange: Perhaps someone else could shed some light on this.

weird mm location. Maybe someone that knows them will give an opinion.

I have never seen a 14-D with the MM in that position. It's far to close to the bust. Closely check the edge of the rim, looks like it could be a drill and pop-up MM.

It looks like you have nothing to lose (other than the submission fee) on this.

My 1914D ANACS vg-8 has mint mark in the same position. The coin you have I would grade at vg-8. I do not grade anything in f-12 unless all lines are showing on wheat. Left wheat stalk is 50 % which to me makes it a textbook vg-8. A nice clean coin. You got a good deal.

Can you take a closeup of the mintmark? There looks like some extra metal on the top left at 11 o'clock position and the the bottom right - 5:30 position.

I took it to a couple more dealers today, told them the concerns posted here. So far everyone has said it looks real. I think I have no choice. To be sure I will have to send it into a TPG. Now will have to figure out what other 4 coins I should send in with it.

Yes, I read it in a book....forgot which one. Really skilled guys drill a hole in the rim, insert a tool with a MM on it and press it up and onto the surface. Then they fill the hole.....just amazing. It's documented fact with pictures of the tools used even.

I would have asked how much they'd give you for it. LOL You should spend an hour or so looking at 1914-D images on ha.com to see if there's ANY coins there with the MM in that position. If you find one, then I'll believe it's real and you'll have piece of mind.

Anyone remember this coin?
It took what seems like forever to get it back from NGC.
What do you think NGC's opinion is?
