based on their silver values, I figured almost 3

Three would be real close. Silver half dollars have about 0.362 Troy oz. of silver in them, so 3 of them would be 1.086 Troy oz.

3 is correct. Most US 90% silver coins were roughly proportional in weight. One troy ounce would be about:

1.33 dollars
2.9 halves
5.75 quarters
14 dimes

another way I had used

1 silver dime + 1 silver quarter + 1 silver dollar = 1 troy ounce
