Based on recent auction records from Heritage, it could be worth around $1000. They sold one in 2005 for $575, another in 2006 for $747, and most recently in 2009 they sold a Type 1(blank) and a Type 2(planchet) for $1035 each.

I had to go to Heritage to even see what it looked like, it is just a blank planchet but I am guessing the reason its worth so much is because you wouldn't expect to find a commem planchet like this out in the wild. I am glad your Grand Father knew what it was and either had it graded himself or how ever he got it, that way it wasn't just excused as a blank piece of metal and got destroyed through out the years. I did some searching and found this http://cgi.ebay.com/Silver-Dollar-a..._1237wt_1141 the pictures are horrible and the listing was ended before it sold on ebay for that price but I am guessing it would probably sell for around the 1000-1300 mark right now. Fred Weinberg has pictures of some on his website and prices for them and most of those are 1300 http://rarererrors.com/inventory/ca...asp?t=c&ID=3

I happened across this tonight after seeing this thread. I was mainly looking to see what crazy high prices HSN was charging for coins. This sounds like what you have.

If HSN is charging $200, I'd guess it can't be really worth more than ~$50.
