Correct, no notch in the Dansco albums, which is why I said earlier that pulling the slides out is a skill on its own.

I am having problems just finding albums for the coins I want to collect. I want to put together a Canadian Type set, and it seems the only company that made one is Whitman but it is OOP. Anyone know were I can get one at a non inflated price (Whitman #9513)? I did find one guy on ebay selling them, but he wants $75 for one, which is over 3x the original price! Same thing with the Whitman #9514 for a Newfoundland Type Collection... can't seem to find that one either. Weird, but even Whitman's web site as no knowledge of these albums! I do like the Dansco albums, but I like others as well. I am planning on picking up an Intercept Shield Album for Lincoln Cents, and a Gardmaster Deluxe Coin Album For Canadian Small Cents. I also like the older Harco albums of which I have several. If anyone can help point me in the right direction for getting an album for a Canadian Type Set, PLEASE let me know! Thanks! -Les |

I like to use Danscos but if they are only from circulation I would use a folder

I remember as a kid using folders, and remember being SO frustrated when all the coins would fall out. Never again.

Do Intercept Shield albums have notches for pulling out the sliders? I've seen pictures with and without, and I'm wondering if they've changed them at some point in time. Does it vary depending on the album?

Odd, I thought kids were the ones that invented the fact that if you wet the back of a coin, place it in a Folder, it reactivates the glue on the rear of the slot. Most kids I know or ever knew always spit on the rear of a coin prior to putting in a Folder. As to finding Albums, if there are any coin shows in your area, go to them. Ask all the dealers if they have any of the ones you need or want. I've found that many dealers purchase entire Albums from people. Take all the coins out and put in flips for individual selling at shows. Most dealers I've talked to throw them out. Some take to shows and sell cheap. A few dealers I have asked about this just gives them to me. Over the years I've probably aquired several hundred Albums from them. Mostly I give them to others if they are not ones I want. One dealer gave me over 40 Albums and Folders at just one show. |

Thats a great idea Carl! I never thought about asking the dealers at the shows if they had some albums they might be willing to part with for a small fee. Thanks for the post!

It varies depending on album. I have a bunch of Whitman's my aunt was using that I inherited. Some are falling apart so I looked to upgrade a couple. I liked the Intercept Shield protection idea so I bought 3 of them and I like them. The Franklin halves and Buffalo nickel albums don't have notches, the Walking Liberty album I got does. The notches do make it easier and both sides can be removed ( so you can vary it if upgrading a lot like I am ;) ). The two that don't have notches only have two pages to the album, that may have some bearing on which ones they "notch" or not - as a guess. I like how professional looking the IS albums appear. One dealer told me they aren't durable enough for his tastes - but then he totes his coins around to a lot of shows so he needs a lot more durability than most. For "home use", I think they will hold up fine. The old Whitman's only show the obverse and fall apart easily IMO. |

wow that idea about hitting up dealers for used albums is terrific. I will try that at the next coin show I got to.

Let them get to know you. Usually they are so busy and see or meet so many people they don't remember if your a steady customer or not. That way if you ask about old and/or used Folders and Albums, they may just give them to you. Most dealers don't try to resell them so they throw them away. Better to give them to a posible present of future customer as good customer relations. One of my favorite stories I use is I'll point at a coin like a Mercury dime and say I'd start collecting those if I had a Mercury dime Album. I sometimes wonder if they are catching on to my faked comments since I've been using it for years. |

Well I have to Sound off on this one. I have used and loved my Dansco Type Set for years, but it needed to be updated with the latest releases and I could not order the required pages (New Cents, Nickels, Quarters and Dollars). After doing some research I thought that I would spend the extra cash for the improved protection of the Intercept Shield Type set. I liked the new slots for the latest releases and at first glance was going to be happy with the new technology. I was instantly disappointed, my Braided Hair Coronet Large Cent would not fit in the slot for it.  OK moving on to fill the rest of the set and then to my dismay my Twenty Cent Piece would not fit.  Called the Mfg. with no result. Does not surprise me it is Made in China. The only choice I have is to go back to my old Dansco and loose the almost $40 for an Album you can't fit the coins in. Was hoping that Intercept Shield would offer some reworked pages but no chance.  I was just another sucker that lost his money and I don't feel right about dumping it on someone else through ebay (Don't need the bad feedback) STICK WITH DANSCO!  At least the coins will fit in the album. |

Looks like I'm another odd one out.
While I was refining my hoard a few months back, I opted mostly for the Littleton's, the least expensive folders I could find.
So far none have fell out as I've taken them from their shelf to check my latest minor find against the collection, and I'm content with writing in my annotations in pencil.
Plus, I like that shade of green.
