Hello, I have always been fascinated with early English/British milled coins but I am actually new to collecting. I recently acquired a 1758 George II shilling and I am curious as to the condition/grade? I was wondering if I could get some insight into grading and how to tell just by looking at the coin. I paid £25 ($40); did I pay too much, or was this a good deal? All insight would be appreciated. I have a small collection so far of about 30 coins ranging from the 1690's to present. Thank you.

I am not too familiar with the grading of English coins but according to the price guide I have a F is £20 and VF is £45. Nice coin!

Hello EMC and welcome to the CCF. With any coin having extensive circulation you have to look at the high points on both the obverse and reverse. On the obverse the hair is flat and I'm not sure what is happening around the eye. The laurel leaves don't seem to have much detail, but they are separated. The crowns would be the key to the reverse, with the beads not being distinct. You can read all of the legends and there doesn't seem to be any dings. I don't think this coin would have a problem being considered a VF, but at the lower end of any numerical qualification (i.e. VF-25).

Great coin overall.

Not a bad coin. It is probably as good as any circulated one that you could find, and the price is about right if you bought it from a dealer, although, on a slow day, ebay might have been a bit less.

I would be very happy if it were in my collection!

Bill.
