Um, I am pretty sure any TPG would put it in a holder if genuine. I've seen coins with more damage than that in details or genuine holders. I would also say that the value without the damage is more like $1500-$2500. If your selling it on ebay, having it in a holder will give people a lot more confidence.

Yea, I agree. It's just a little confusing because I get different answers from different people. Both coin shops said that a TPG would not grade it, only authenticate it. They both said ANACS would not put damaged coins in a holder. Honestly, I'm just happy to have found this coin in my collection. It is definitely the most valuable coin I own now. Damage and all. =)

Wouldn't hurt to talk to ANACS yourself, send them pictures if they would put it in a holder. It would be tough for you to sell without the authentication, dealer will offer you half the amount to get it .
Without damage would definitely be a F-15 and worth in lower 2 Grand+ for the collector, dealers will try to low ball you.
Good luck!

MacMercury, As per your suggestion, I have emails ANACS the pictures with questions on if they would grade it or put it in a holder due to the damage. The fact that I have about 10 Mercury dimes, and the only one that was damaged was the 1916-D is very heartbreaking. Thank you for your help.

Let me see if I can help you understand...
You won't get a grade from PCGS, but they may put it in a "Genuine" slab if they feel it's genuine. You may or may not get a Graded "Details - Damaged" Slab from NGC or ANACS, so long as it's genuine.
So you know, asking for a "Genuine only" authentication and slabbing usually costs less than a full grading and slabbing.
It is disappointing to have a valuable coin that is damaged, and thus less valuable - but you still have a neat coin in your collection! If you have it slabbed as "genuine" you can sell it and upgrade it to a non-damaged one, or you could simply keep it in your collection as whoever put it there seemed to like it. Maybe there's a story behind it...
Either way, best of luck!

Delaner. Thank you, I understand what you mean. The 1st coin dealer that I went to basically said the same thing. The 2nd dealer that I went to said that a TPG wouldn't put a damaged coin in "Genuine" slab at all. I did email ANACS and asked if they would. Still waiting for a reply. I really wish there was a back story for this coin. I actually found it about 10yrs ago while working for a building company. The house we were renovating belonged to a hoarder that died and had no family to leave his belongings to. Instead of throwing everything out (as ordered), I took a few interesting items home. Turns out I made the right decision. =)

Well the money was actually in books. If I would've thrown the books out without inspecting, I would of thrown out the 1916-D Mercury dime..

Good call! But if you can get that coin in a holder, you will be surprised what it will sell for ;-)

This may be a dumb question but here it goes. Is there a way to restore this coin? I know they restore old valuable comic books & things like that.

Um, no. Not in a way which wouldn't be obvious, and hint at an attempt for deception.

Ok, I was asking in the legal sense of restoration. Not as a deception. Thanks.

From ANACS:
ANACS is the first major grading service to grade cleaned, corroded, damaged, repaired, and other "problem coins". I have never sent a coin to ANACS with this type of damage, but I see no reason why they wouldn't holder it.
BTW, NCS does coin conservation, but your coin would be out of the realm of anything they can do for it.

For coin sales, a holder can mean the difference between $100 and $1000

vermontensium. Thats good to know. I think I will sent it. Even though I don't think I want to sell anymore. This coin has been a great conversational piece for me for the last few days.
