Hi everyone, I've recently become intrigued by coins. Mostly due to being a big history buff. I went to my first estate sale today and used what I have recently learned about coins to purchase my first lot of coins. They were all sold separately and 4 of the coins I purchased were Liberty Half Dollars. They are as follows: 1941S 1941D 1942D 1943S I paid roughly $55 for the four of them, which is still more than their silver content. I made sure to purchase the ones with the mint marks, there were only a few. I'm still learning, and I know there is a lot to learn. I had my phone with me at the time so it helped me some. How did I do? I have not cleaned these. Should I? This is the 1941 D

Dejan. I think you did fine. Just on melt value as of noon today they are $15.35 each X 4=$61.40.

Thanks for the reply! I read that they are valued fairly high due to Mint marks if in good condition. Any idea of what it may be worth to a collector? I'm really looking to get into collecting and would like to know more about grades and values.

HI Dejan do not clean your coins. Cleaning only reduces any possible numismatic value. You could clean any of the coins that have only silver value and see the effects, just for a learning exercise.

Dont clean the coins at all, thats the last thing you want to do. By the way, nice coins, Walking Liberty halves are a favorite among collectors! I have many myself!

In that grade, I would put it a few bucks over melt, say $17 to $18.

Indeed ... to the CCF. Hoping you pull up a stool to the campfire and stick around ... this is an amazing friendly forum filled with great folks and true experts on all things coin related. Your 1941-D Walker looks great to me ... well done. I will repeat ... Do not clean your coins! You will quickly ruin their numismatic value. David

Dejan: Welcome to the CCF . Nice first score. As everybody has already said , don't clean the coins. You might look for a coin store or coin show around where you live. You should be able to pick up some supplies, such as holders, magnifying glass and some books. Good hunting. KK

If you clean your coins, you're cleaning away the history that you love. As some wise man (men) once said, DON'T CLEAN 'EM! to CCF.

You made a good buy since these coins are currently selling for at least $16 each retail. Value is close to melt for common dates unless they grade AU or better. The 1941-S is a somewhat better date but won't carry much premium in circulated grades. Walking Liberty halves are great coins and are very popular. Congratulations on your new hobby and welcome to the forum!
