If you wanted to build an evenly matched set of Barber halves it would be pretty easy to do. There are a lot to choose from. With the Circ Classic Commems are at the mercy of what comes along. With the common ones you might have a chance but not with the harder to come by ones. I like both of your recent additions. I just wish your AU53 Boone was one I needed for my 144 set.:)

After nearly 5 years of assembling this difficult set ... the opportunity to add a new example is a rare treat indeed.

Downgrades come by occasionally ... and are always welcome additions to the pursuit of the circulated type low-ball set.

With only four 'holes' however ... new additions are a truly rare occasion ...

Thrilled to share with you my latest addition ... an honestly circulated (VF35) 1935 Hudson with exceptional 'circulation cameo' eye appeal.

This Hudson is very beautiful ... and I remain amazed that such a coin with only 10,000 original coins distributed could have circulated to this level of wear ...

Personally I enjoy the Chester Beach funky design for this coin ... and consider the Hudson as one of my favorites in the series ... who could not enjoy the image of Neptune seated backwards on a whale ... while a mermaid blows on a conch shell.

This coin is very rare in circulated state of preservation ... hence my joy to finally find one.

I purchased the coin already certified off ebay ... my best guess is the provenance extends back to a well know collector of the series who disposed of his holdings before I started pursuing the set.

This example is Population two with two coins certified lower at VF30 ... however ... there is a lower one out there somewhere ... waiting to be found.

I'm thrilled to have finally filled this hole in the set.

1935 Hudson Sesquicentennial Half Dollar - PCGS VF35

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

I've also updated my want listing ... three holes to go ... with lot's of potential downgrades.

Enjoy!

Congrats on this Hudson. It is a great looking one. It's always a bonus when you can get them already certified. The hunt continues. :)

Huge accomplishment and milestone for your set David!
Congratulations on getting one step closer to finishing your awesome set.

It's really amazing to find such a tough coin in this grade with that level of eye appeal... What a gem.

Excellent addition! Congrats!

The detail on ol' Neptune's face is almost as good as I've seen on some poorly struck MS examples!

Hope it won't be long before you fill your final three holes!

I'll be keeping my eye out for you!

Update on the set ...

PCGS has rendered their opinions on the Boone and Texas downgrades shown above ...

The 1934 Boone is judged to be PCGS XF40. I'm OK with that opinion ... was hoping for a VF35 grade ... however the coin is a nice downgrade from my prior AU53 type example. The coin is truly gorgeous in hand with tremendous surfaces and eye appeal.

The 1934 Texas is judged to be PCGS F12 ... I truly believe the wizards missed the mark on this coin. IMHO the coin is at maximum a VG08 coin ... and not too big of a stretch to G06.

Oh well .... you never know what the wizards will say when faced with these seldom seen circulated commemorative coins.

However ... they are both tremendous coins and I am pleased to have them in the set.

Sharing with you a recent addition ... I believe this coin was a long time pocket piece based on the bright surfaces ...

1920 Pilgrim Tercentenary Half Dollar - I Grade PO01

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

We'll see what the PCGS wizards have to say about this one.

Enjoy

Nice Pilgrim.

Are you sure it isn't a 1921 or to worn to determine that they would not slab it?

I'd say that 0 of the 1920 date is pretty easy to see below the rear of the ship, and obviously not a 1 IMHO.

The 1921 would appear on the obverse field, under Bradford's nose.
The 1920 still appears, in the same place, on a 1921 dated example.

Beautiful addition David. That should most definetely be a P01 and I've got my fingers crossed for you!

The 1921 Pilgrim shows the same 1920 date on the reverse.

Correct jack jeckel - I forgot that. As worn as the coin is I'm also now wondering if the date on the obverse could have worn off.

I agree that the Pilgrim should be a PO01. Do you have a pic of Stevens' PO01 to compare?

Update on the set ...

The Pilgrim shown above is now in PCGS hands for grading ... I still say 1920 PO01 ... we'll learn together what the wizards say.

Two recent downgrades to share ...

1934 Texas Centennial of Independence Half Dollar

PCGS AG03

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

I am now alas the owner of three certified 1934 Texas low-balls ... such is the danger/joy of pursuing this set ... a lower coin is always out there somewhere!

1922 Grant Memorial Half Dollar - PCGS VG08

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

Nice downgrade from my F15 example ... pleased to include the coin in my set.

The pursuit of this challenging collection has brought me tremendous numismatic joy over the years ... and I commend to all a similar experience for whatever challenging pursuit you may have in mind.

Enjoy

David
