Thanks Jay for the link ... I appreciate all 'eyes' to help me find these.

Agreed that Columbian has a lovely circulation cameo contrast ... alas the obverse engraving (interesting as it may be) precludes potential TPG certification ... and so I will pass on it.

What a GREAT collection! I've been doing this over the last 5 years or so myself and it's so nice to see someone else's set as well.

I'm down to 5 more on my list: Hawaii, Spanish Trail, Hudson, Cincinnati and Columbia, SC. I'm not really going for a lowball set - VF-XF is more in my wheelhouse, but I have a few that are lower/higher in grade that just seemed to fit. My photo skills are horrible, but I'll try to post some pics of my set if I ever get around to it.

BTW, David - I'm pretty sure you were the one that referred me to this site, as I bought a couple of circulated commems from you on ebay in the past few months - thanks for the tip!

to the CCF XF40 ... pleased that you found us.

Indeed ... that was me.

There are not very many of us who have the perseverance to pursue this challenging set ... I was hopeful that you might be of a like mind.

Only 5 to go for your set is a tremendous accomplishment indeed. Your final five are difficult coins ... extending my best wishes to you as you search for them.

Please do ... there are a few of us at the CCF who are pursuing this set ... we would enjoy seeing your coins and offering our collective support.

Again ...

The funny thing with the ones that I'm missing is that I've seen or even had the opportunity to buy examples of all of them EXCEPT for the Columbia. I never would have thought that one would be the toughest to find.
There was an AU50 Hawaiian on ebay about a month back that wouldve been perfect for my set, but we just had out roof re-done and I didn't have the $. I have a feeling I'll be regretting that one for a long time to come.
How about everyone else? any regrets about ones that got away?

XF40 - Welcome to this site. Is yours a graded set or raw? I would venture to say that of your last 5 the Hawaiian will be the easiest to find. You do have some hurdles to complete your set. When I finished mine the Cincinnati was the last one.

Thanks guys! My set is raw, although I have a handful that are slabbed. I have a couple of coins with some problems that would keep them from getting into holders. Some I'm OK with, others I'd upgrade as soon as I could find them.

Worn out (Ty?) - yes, it is Eric. Been meaning to get some pictures to you of some of my dups. Hopefully I'll get around to it this week. I just havent had much time for coins these past few months.

Writing to share two likely downgrades to the set ... in hand the coins are certifiable .... but you never know for sure what the PCGS wizards might do.

1934 Texas Centennial Half Dollar

Likely grades in the G06 range. A few rim bruises that I believe are consistent with the overall wear and not terribly distracting.

This would represent a downgrade to my current PCGS VF20 example.

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

1934 Boone Bicentennial Half Dollar

Hopeful that I have finally acquired a truly circulated type example of the Boone. My judgment is that it will certify in the XF40 range ... a nice downgrade from my current PCGS AU53 example.

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

Enjoy!

David,

Two beautiful coins that will fit perfectly in your set!

That Texas may not have the eye appeal of your current example, but it's certainly much more worn...

I live the Boone. That's one of the nicest circulated examples I've seen.

They've found a good home with you. Best of luck with the wizards.

Nice pair of downgrades! (It's still hard for me to say "nice" and "downgrade" in the same sentence! )

Glad to see that you are still finding enhancements to your collection. From your previous posts, I know finding such "improvements" is a difficult task for a number of the circulated commemoratives you are pursuing.

Of your two latest acquisitions, my eye gravitates toward the Boone. While clearly a circulated example, there remains enough of the design for me to fully enjoy the artist's work. The Texas has lost so many of its design details, that I am forced to imagine to a large extent. (I'm not the best imagineer when it comes to coin designs! )

Good luck with the continued hunt!

Wow ... thanks for the kind words and generous support for these two newest coins ... do know that your feedback is important and valued by me.

A few thoughts based on what I heard ...

One of the many challenges inherent in pursuing this admittedly non-mainstream collection is the visual balance of the coins I choose to admit to the set.

I offered some advice just recently on another CCF thread that completely contradicts what I am achieving so far with my circulated classic silver commemorative set ...

Quoting myself from that thread ...

Quote:
From my perspective ... in general 'nice looking sets' are visually matched ... that is the overall technical grade and surface appearance is visually uniform amongst the coins in the set.

Not the case at all in this set of mine ... and I often pause to ask myself what can be done to move closer to that objective.

HONDO makes the point quite well and correctly ...

Less we forget ... here is my current PCGS VF20 Texas ...

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

One can certainly argue ... as I have done with myself ... that the 'better' coin of the two is the higher graded one ...

Do believe indeed that commems needs to use less imagination on the VF20.

I tend to justify to myself the hodgepodge assembly of coins grading from FR02 to AU55 as a result of market availability ... and that is truly the greatest challenge in pursuing the set.

That said ... pondering the wisdom of chasing every downgrade just for the downgrade ... at some point for this set to be truly 'special' it needs to merge towards the goal of visual uniformity.

Ahhhh ... we'll figure that out in time.

Thanks for the support ... and for listening to the ruminations of a committed collector chasing a very difficult collecting challenge.
