Update on the PCGS wizards views on two coins previously shown in this thread .. Alas no report on the Columbian (tremendous support BTW) which is still raw awaiting submittal. However ... two tremendous lowballs to share with you ... 1925 Norse Medal (Thick) - PCGS FR02 Upon re-submittal ... PCGS Pop 1/1 ... there is somewhere a PCGS certified PO01 example ... Many collectors consider the Norse to be the 51st type coin ... pleased that the wizards have seen this truly pocket piece the same way as I originally judged it. 1921 Alabama Centennial Half Dollar - PCGS AG03Under-graded IMHO and indicative of the wizards lack of experience with these seldom seen coins. I judge G06 ... pleased with the PCGS wizards grade ... The never-ending hunt for these coins in honestly circulated state brings me great joy ... and I appreciate all your kind support! Thanks for sharing the journey (so far) with me. David

Great coins David! Love that Norse Medal. It's a really pretty circulated example.

Congrats on getting the Norse in the holder you desired - it only seems "fair" considering your expertise in the area. (Sorry, couldn't resist!)
I agree with you re: the Alabama, AG-03 does seem a bit low considering the remaining overall detail on the coin. My guess is the completely worn down rims had a big impact on the final grade.
Thanks for sharing your updates! A very impressive collection!

Pleased to share what I hope (expect) is a downgrade of a very difficult to find classic silver commemorative in my set: 1936 Lynchburg (VA) Sesquicentennial Half Dollar - Raw, VF/XF I went through the required checklist .... authentic? Check. Original surfaces? Check with interesting toning. Honestly circulated? Check. I judge likely grade at XF40 .... the wizards could go as low as VF30 or as high as AU55. LOL My current circulated Lynchburg example is PCGS XF45 ... so I am expecting a downgrade here. The 1936 Lynchburg half ... being a member of the 'commemorative craze' era is a very difficult coin to find today in honestly (certifiable) circulated state. PCGS has certified 3 total examples below AU ... two at XF45 and the current lowball at VF35. Here's to hoping the wizards agree with my views on this one! David

Good luck! Was that one of the five "stoppers" that you identified in the "Days of..." Thread?
Also, any updates on that Columbian?

Quick reply ... then up again tomorrow at 5am for work .. Quote: Was that one of the five "stoppers" that you identified in the "Days of..." Thread? No ... but it remains a very challenging coin to find today in honestly circulated condition. The so-called stoppers are ... IMHO with some experience pursuing the circulated set ... Old Spanish Trail, Cincinnati, York County, Elgin and New Rochelle. Thanks for recalling commems tremendous 'days of' thread ... And extra credit for recalling the concept I presented of 'stoppers' relative to these lovely and challenging circulated examples. The date-uncertain Columbian half dollar is currently in PCGS hands for their expert views ... update to come. David

As always, nice "downgrade!" Quote: My current circulated Lynchburg example is PCGS XF45 ... so I am expecting a downgrade here. I'm certainly not the expert you are in circulated US commemoratives, but I can't see how that Lynchburg could come back from PCGS without grading lower than XF-45. My eyes see more wear than I would expect from an XF-45 coin. Good luck! Hope it works out for you!

The PCGS wizards have rendered their opinion on the 'date uncertain' Columbian Expo half previously discussed ... 1893 Columbian Exposition Half Dollar - PCGS PO01 Indeed ... 1893. Thanks indeed to commems for the overlays ... proved to be correct. Truth be told ... I submitted the coin as an 1892 ... somehow the wizards were comfortable enough to arrive at a definitive date. Thrilled that it was not judged *86* (authenticity unverifiable) ... I have seen many of those in my honest pursuit of this difficult series. Long reply ... long search. Join me if you wish to help celebrate my first ever PO01 classic silver commemorative. David

That is great! Looks great in the slab with those four coveted characters right above it.

Congrats on avoiding the "86" designation as well as on receiving the PO01 grade! I can only imagine how thrilled you are with the piece! Happy to see my use of straight yellow lines didn't fail me!
