This has to be the most difficult collection to compile, and to find them in a circulated condition I would have thought to be impossible.

Truly a long time between updates ... and that's a result of the rare market availability of these coins from the 'commemorative craze' era.

Here is a quote from myself on Page 1 (9/16/2011) of this long pursued collecting quest ...

Quote:
It is possible ... maybe even likely ... that I will never be able to complete the set ... the coins just might not ever come available in circulated condition.

Believe I might have finally ... after 7 years of diligent searching ... found the final coin to complete my certified USA circulated classic silver commemorative type set ...

1936 York County (Maine) Tercentenary Half - AU50 (raw)

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

Currently submitted to the PCGS wizards for their evaluation ... we'll know their views in a month or so

Downgrade hunts will go on forever ... and such is the joy of pursuing such a challenging collection.

Congrats on finding the York! It must feel great to finally locate this one after all of time and effort I know you've put into searching for it.

Your MS and circulated sets are both terrific collecting achievements and, I'm sure, are great sources of personal pride.

Thanks for sharing your journey! It's been wonderfully interesting and educational for me to follow along!

To have a type set of these commerative coins is a true accomplishment. Now with two sets, PCGS grades, pristine and circulated you have taken collecting to a new level. Congratulations and good luck on your up and down grades that you surly will peruse.

Truly appreciate the kind comments on my circulated York County.

I remain mindful that the coin is raw and now at the PCGS wizards for their evaluation. My experience with that endeavor suggest that you never can tell what will come back in regards to this seldom seen series.

That said - I'm hopeful this obviously circulated York County completes my initial attempt at both the MS and circulated classic silver type sets ...

As muddler correctly suggests ... upgrades and downgrades will go on forever.

PCGS wizards results on the York County in a month or so ... I'll be sure to let you know.

The PCGS wizards have rendered their opinions on the York County ... their views are generally in line with mine.

1936 York County (ME) Tercentenary Half Dollar - PCGS AU55

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

The certification of this York County finally completes a long held collecting objective of mine ... a complete 50 coin type set of classic circulated commemorative in honestly circulated condition.

PCGS has a fun 'digital album' concept whereby photographs of Registry coins can be uploaded and viewed electronically as if they were stored in a Dansco style album .... I've uploaded photographs of my entire circulated type set into such a digital album.

Anyone interested in viewing the set can 'see' all the coins here:

http://www.PCGS.com/SetRegistry/Alb...?setid=98180

Acquisition of this York County brings me great collecting joy ... an enjoyment fueled by the certain knowledge that somewhere out there is a lower one waiting to be discovered.

The thrill of the hunt for these seldom seen coins will go on forever.

Enjoy - David

Congrats! Congrats! Congrats!

Wonderful collection and fantastic collecting effort! A definite source of pride!

Really enjoyed "flipping" through your PCGS album - nice to see the entire collection in that format.

It's be fun watching you assemble the collection over the past few years (since I've been part of CCF), I look forward to seeing your future downgrades!

Completion of this set (forever downgrades notwithstanding) has caused me to spend some time reflecting ...

I'm hopeful that you'll accept the following post in the spirit which it is given ... a joyous look back as a dedicated collector who has finally achieved a long held goal ... I'm sure many of you can relate to the feeling.

The strongest feeling that stands out for me is the camaraderie that I've developed over the years with the other (known) three dedicated collectors pursuing this same difficult objective.

Bob, Taylor and Ty .... your support during the dry spells, your praise for the rare finds ... and your overall understanding of sharing this challenge has been rewarding and invaluable to me. Thank you for the coin friendship.

A true salute as well to commems ... a coin friend who has always been supportive of this effort and who I hope to again meet at a coin show somewhere. I owe commems a true thanks for the 'eyes' to find my (raw) rarest example of the set ... now PCGS G04 Elgin.

I recall fondly as well my attempts to share knowledge of this circulated series with HONDO ... suppose I can consider myself his initial mentor in the pursuit.

Today HONDO is a fully knowledgeable member of this small family ... having quickly outpaced my humble efforts to support his early efforts.

I truly enjoy the real coin friendship that HONDO and I have developed with our time together now at shows pursuing these coins as well as other collecting interests.

I have truly gained a lot of hard earned knowledge in this series ... some by mistakes made!

Perhaps with the benefit of additional experience I'll attempt to update my listing of the 5 circulated commemorative 'stoppers' as shared during commems 'Days of' thread a few years ago ... I believe there are now six.

I went back to Page 1 of this long running thread (9/16/2011) ... wondering what was left of those initial two years collecting efforts ...

The Stone Mountain was sent to HONDO as my encouraging gift that he consider the series ... that paid off in spades with a brilliant collector joining us!

There a four of those coins still with me in PCGS problem free holders ... BTW, Lexington, Monroe and Vermont.

It's been a great journey ... and I'm thrilled that my CCF friends have been along to help me share it.

Now ... onwards to the downgrades. Anyone know of any worn out commemorative out there?

Best - David

David,

Congratulations on this milestone! It's been a long road but it's a great accomplishment.

Glad to have enjoyed part of the journey, and looking forward to hunting with you again sometime soon!

Could not agree with you more... The friendships made along the way have been the best part of collecting these circulated commems.
