I traded a 1oz gold eagle that I bought from my guy this week for $1,700 for 44 ASE's, two rolls of 2011s and 4 others. This officially puts be back in the triple digits in silver but under 10 oz of gold. Do you think my 10:1 silver to gold ratio is way off? I just really like the shear bulk of the silver.

I think the trade is fine...I'm a silver guy myself. But I'm more impressed by your purchase of an AGE for $1700 last week. Gold wasn't close to that low was it?

If you got a AGE for $1700 you did well right there alone. But getting all those ASE's is good too. Where I live, they sell for spot + $7 for 2011's and spot + $5 for other common years. So what you acquired would cost $2060. An AGE purchased here would cost about $1920 so in that regard you did well too.

My guy just needed to liquidate it in a big way and that is what he payed for it in his shop.

That's my problem, liquidity. I'm trading the other way right now, silver for gold. Silver looks more promising in the longer run but I'm finding that I can't afford to have to sell on a low when I can't wait

Sounds like a great deal.

It does make me wonder, though, about the PM market. He had to liquidate and didn't have a more profitable avenue?

Oh well, sounds to me like his loss.

Better than sterling achievement!

That's too bad for him but good for you. I am a bit surprised that he didn't have another avenue to unload this for even a small profit either to another local dealer or to an online wholesaler, or that as a shop owner he had to scramble to raise $1700. The reasons don't matter though, it was just surprising to read this.

Throwbackkid:

I think the trade was a good one. I have always believed that silver will outperform gold over the next decade!

He could have sold it to Silvertowne for at least melt. He must have been in a hurry. Good for you . Piles of Siver Eagles are more fun that money in the bank.

It was probably just a fake AGE heavily gold plated and copper on the inside. Impossible to detect. The guy knew what he was doing unloading it so you thought you got a deal.

Joe,

Not only are you a troll but the fact you cannot understand throwbackkid traded 1oz of gold for 44oz of silver, makes me think you need to go back to school for some reading comprehension. Uneducated trolls are the worst type.

Sure, impossible to detect...except for its weight and Specific Gravity It would have to be oversized to match the weight of an AGE while the SG of gold is more than twice that of copper. You would have sounded much more edumacated if you had stated tungsten but that has problems as well. The SG of tungsten matches that of gold but it is much too hard to strike into a convincing facsimile of a coin, works much better for counterfeit bars. You might be onto something though joe, it could have been gold-plated platinum- cheap junk for sure
