Dumb Question 2014 P-D Kennedy Half Dollars

ilikeikes Pillar of the Community United States 1205 Posts	Posted 01/28/2015 9:03 pm I'm stumped...maybe it's the plethora of 2014 Kennedy half dollar strikes(used to be just P-D-S-S), maybe it's my fried brain...anyway..my question is: I got the 2014 "Discovery Set" from the US mint...says in Mint write up P-Mint is uncirculated, D-Mint circulated, and, the S-Mint Proof included. I sent the coins into PCGS for grading..I DID notice a difference in the P-D finishes, slight, but noticible(both were nice strikes)..will BOTH of these be labeled as Business Strikes? I don't recall a "Unc. Mint Set" designation, except the old "Satin Finish" varieties..I'll tell you 1 thing, the D-Mint coin was darn near mirrored, so, I asked for a "PL" designation...I doubt I'll get it, but, they did it for the "Enhanced Finish 2014-S Unc Silver" KHD, which added a small premium. So..are the KND's from uncirculated sets graded the same as business strikes from mint rolls and bags? I guess I'm confused whether or not the coins in the Discovery set are the same as the High Relief 50th anniversary 2-coin set. See why my brain is fried? Report this Post to the Staff

DNA Pillar of the Community United States 2734 Posts	Posted 02/25/2015 12:24 am In this Set, the "P" is a "Mint Set" (Uncirculated Coin Set) strike, which are struck at higher pressure on smaller, lower-speed presses. The "D" is a circulation-finish coin, produced on the main floor's high-speed presses, in the same manner as true "business strike" coins produced for circulation. Both of these, and the Clad "S" Proof, have the standard low-relief obverses. In 2014, the higher-relief 1964-style obverse was used only in the special sets, and it is quite distinct from the standard obverse. The 2015 circulation-finish JFK's sold in bags and rolls now feature the higher-relief obverse. Report this Post to the Staff

ilikeikes Pillar of the Community United States 1205 Posts	Posted 02/25/2015 12:57 am Thanks DNA..I can't wait for my grades...never seen a D Mint strike so darn near perfect..I also sent in 7 birth sets..the KHD's were darn near flawless(almost, but not quite 100% mirrored--jet black), and, the 10c were also what I would call true "first strike" coins..not a hint of die wear, streaks, and super frosty cameos) Report this Post to the Staff
