Moving from cents to Walking halves to collect. Like to buy several times per year. Have been looking at later dates where I can afford to buy MS 65 grade. This means early dates are definitely out of my price range. Am not worried about collecting a bunch of different dates just nice coins. Is this a good or bad way of doing things? Also a suggestion of where to get a fair deal on these half dollars other than ebay. You guys and gals opinions who have experience in this area will be greatly appreciated.
I should add that from my experience, prices for slabbed coins on ebay are priced at full retail value. On Heritage you are presented with more opportunities to buy slabbed at wholesale.
Not all MS-65 coins are the same (no surprise there). It's particularly so for WL halves; the early 40's are a prime example. Strike strength varies considerably. Liberty's left hand is a key and so are the flag lines across the leg.
I don't know about a site, but keep an old Coins Magazine around that shows Photograde strike strength. This is what I'm after. Full dress bands and eagle breast feathers.
I prefer a dirty full strike xf early walker to any flat strike unc.
