Could someone help confirm this Miss Place D mark? And is the 97 in the date is an error? Also a little rough but possibly a value

This is just a normal, damaged nickel, no special notes about the mint mark. Worth face value.

I agree that it is damage. The mintmark is tilted slightly counterclockwise but, that's not unusual for coins before 1990 because the MM was hand-punched on the dies.

I think the "good one" had the D between the 5 and the triangular point in whatever that ribbon is called in Jefferson's ponytail.
