Found This War Nickel In The Register At Work. Is This A "woodgrain"?

Noeitr New Member United States 9 Posts	Posted 02/17/2019 11:34 am Hi! This is a 1944 P. It has a bit of a weird texture to it. Mainly on the reverse. Not really sure if this texture is because of heavy circulation though, it doesn't look like it to me. Would love to hear all thoughts! Thanks. GrapeCollects Pillar of the Community United States 8941 Posts	Posted 02/17/2019 12:18 pm It's due to the alloy of the metal.The tarnish tends to form in flow lines giving it the woodgrain look. What your seeing is the dark areas are the manganese the "lighter" areas are the silver and copper. It's not that the metals are seperate it's just the way the alloy flows. Noeitr New Member United States 9 Posts	Posted 02/17/2019 1:08 pm I wouldn't have thought that the alloy itself would give that effect. So is it the interaction between silver and manganese? If not, why don't half dollar alloys from 64-70 have a similar effect? Thanks for all the responses btw. I always learn something on here wheather I lurk or not.
