Very nice die clash! That's quite a strong one. Definitely 2x2 worthy in my opinion.

The pictures, at least on my monitor, make this look like it could be a clear foreign substance on the coin. A short soak in acetone might remove the substance if this is what it is.

@Earle42, This coin suffered from verdigris (along with hundreds of wheat cents I had stored in rolls for years). It was soaked/sonicated with sesquicarbonate to neutralized it. I would have just used Verdi-care, but I found the clash after cleaning a whole lot of cents. The number was way too high for individual treatment. This cleaning gives the coins the appearance seen here. It is much more attractive in person than in the photos.

@Earle42 look more closely, it's very obviously a clash. I think there's a bad habit among some of us frequent posters here to just assume coins are PMD/other worthless phenomena and dismiss them without a close look. Just saying "no" to every coin will make you correct 99% of the time, because true error/variety coins are very rare. However, your false negative rate will be very bad.

Also, I wouldn't get in the habit of cleaning coins @snagglepuss. If it was so verdigried that it didn't matter, then I guess no real harm done, but the process you described will permanently affect the surfaces of any coin you use it on, so only do it if the coin is in such bad shape that there's no value left to lose by cleaning.

This coin was not as bad with verdigris as some of the others, but it was "damaged" already. I tested, with before an after photos this batch cleaning and the surface patina was not really effected. They were probably valueless before and probably valueless now, but at least they are stable.

Nice clash, there may be more clashing evident under the bust from EPU on reverse. If you can, post a close up of that area.

@ CoinHI, I do not have the coin with me at work, but I do not remember seeing any real evidence up that far on the rev. I will take a closer look and post a photo if I see anything interesting.
