I have a friend at our local bank who sets aside Wheats for me, so I get dozens each month.
She's cool.

They are out there. Some have remained in 'active' circulation since they were minted. Some may have had prolonged periods of 'inactivity'--like lounging in the back of a squalid sock drawer for a few decades plus before getting back into circulation. Some have been placed back into circulation through hoard/collection dumps. Over the last few decades I've turned in/deposited rolls of common wheat cents (G+ to F+) at two of my banks.

The last time and first time (that I've noticed) I received a Wheat cent in change was I think one or two years ago. I had never seen a Wheat cent before, or just hadn't paid attention until then. I actually looked it up on the internet to find out what it was. If I remember correctly, it was a 1940-something. Unfortunately, it's now mixed in with all my 1940's Wheat cents. But that was the coin that started it all for me. That's when I started collecting pennies and other coins, all because I thought that penny was really cool looking. I've since found many Wheat cents in bank rolls and customer rolls, but never again in change. But, I'm very glad that I got that Wheat cent in change when I did. Wheat cents have a special place in my heart :-)

Cheers!

By coincidence, I just found a Wheat cent (1944-D) in a stack of change someone left outside a convenience store today! That's my third one found on the street since moving to a new city in late August.

I get Wheat Cents in my pocket change frequently here in Phoenix. I have 83 Wheat Cents, I've pulled 80 of them out of my pocket change over the last 5 years and found 3 in parking lots, one of the 3 being a scratched up 1909.

Can't remember the last time when I actually got one in change either....
Active coin roll hunter, I average around 10 per box in my local Las Vegas area, some earlier dates appear from time to time, too.
Found a few over time on sidewalks.

Guess I have been luckly on searching rolls as I get 2 to 3 MIN. for every 10 dollars I search. Best so far was 8 in one roll.

I usually get a half dozen or so per year in change. I would think most are from "recirculation". That is, they sat in a jar for years until someone dumped at bank or coin machine.
