I need help trying to attribute this 1884-P that I have come across. It appears to have a normal date (not far / very far). Mine has a crack through the date which is higher up than the VAM-1 images and doesn't appear to match any of the VAMs with a normal date (or otherwise). The VAM-17 shows similar dots and has a note that the OBV die had rusted, but mine doesn't share any of the other pickups for this VAM.
I would love help on the VAM designation, but am most interested in getting feedback on the pitting that is all over the OBV (and a bit on the REV but not nearly as extensive). Made me think it might be a fake, etc. (who would fake an 84-P) but it weighs and tests correctly and the pitting (which looks like a bunch of little gas bubbles) is constrained to the OBV devices (and not the fields).
My presumption is that it was just a rusty die and go from there?
My setup doesn't make it easy to image the full OBV/REV so I uploaded shots of the highest interest. If useful to provide others, let me know.
