Down at my in-laws for the long weekend. My father-in-law who is the definition of grumpy old man, is a trucker and doesn't get back in town until later this morning. When we were down here in November I noticed he had a small wastebasket filled with change, sure there's at least $2,000 in there. He wouldn't let my son and I look at it because "I'm going to cash that in someday." We assured him we'd replace whatever we took, but to no avail.

When I got here last night my mother-in-law, not the grumpy old lady, says if you want to look through there, go ahead. So my son and I sat down for a couple hours, without our books, and just looked for good/old stuff and P State Quarters, which are hard to come by around here in the Midwest. I made it through about 90% of it last night down to the bottom which was mostly pennies, and by that time I was done.

Ended up pulling about $28 face of pre-60 nickels, wheat and 09 Cents, and State Quarters. I could have easily spent my full weekend on it if I had my books here, but we pretty much just had time to do a "fly-by". None the less it was pretty fun going through the father-in-law's mini-hoard.

Best find was a 1945-P nickel in AU/MS condition! Certainly the nicest War Nickel I've found. Oh well, so goes my weekend at the in-laws.

Went out this morning in search of some halves.

Congrats! I did a similar thing with my mother-in-law's change jar although it was only about $100. I came away with a few wheaties and a couple of pre-1960 nickels.
