Thanks for posting that Zonad I am searching for that coin in a better grade VF-EF and found this site because of your post. Looks like lots of info here. Too bad the coin is low grade. Charlton 65th calls them marker varieties. I am having a hard time tracking one of these down. Anyway I am signed up

There was one in EF-AU just a couple of weeks ago.

Was thinking about pulling the trigger but didn't for some reason :).

Is this the overdate? or just a normal (slightly overpriced) 1858?

No, this is not the 1858/1558. Just a less well known variety, but easily seen.

I saw somewhere that technically its not a "blundered I"...but some sort of a "place marker"?

But if the concept of a "place marker" exists, which would it have not shown up on any other Canadian coin?

Yeah...if any 1858/1558 were that cheap, it would be "poof!", gone in a heartbeat.

Nice coin Zonad I seen that coin in my search. Is that yours? Looks like it's graded, VF20?. danlos I think I seen the one you where talking about on ebay? EF45 with blundered I and 5/5for $450 it ended early I was really thinking about it but thought $450 was a little rich, now I am thinking maybe not. I think it is easier to find the 8/5 then the blundered, maybe because 8/5 is more expensive. Zonad is your coin a 5/5 as well? I have one but no sign of a blundered I.

Yes...that one...$450 was probably fair...but takes the fun out of the "hunt".

That's why I haven't bothered with buying a 1858/1558...you can always get one, just have to dish out $1000-$2000 for it :).

danlos I have an 1858/1558 which was expensive I also have a 5/5 these where easy to find but I am finding it very difficult to find the blundered I, I have been only looking close to 6 months but have found nobody that has one VF+. I am starting to wonder how scarce they are. With the position marker would these have been limted to a very short run then polished off the die once everything was lined up thus making it hard to find? The 1558/1858 is a repair to a damaged 8 to keep the production going. The different dies and such makes it very interesting

Finally found mine! ICCS VF30...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/25092807143....m1439.l2649

4 months after missing out on a ICCS EF45 at $450...I dish out $400 for a ICCS VF30...sigh...

Just goes to show...you snooze...you lose. The seller reposted the EF45 at $2500 and has no intention to offer it at $450 again...although he wont find a buyer at $2500 for at least a decade...I'd probably do the same...but only if I had a AU50+ ;)
