The equivalent of half dollar coins in Japan.

Above - Japan 1947 (Showa 22) 50 sen - Brass
Below - Japan 1926 (Taisho 15) 50 sen - .720 fine silver

100 sen = 1 yen
1 yen used to be like 1 US dollar, now it is 1 yen = 1 US cent

Interesting to note, that the coin from 1947 (Post-war, US Occupation) has the number 50 in western numerals, but the older one doesn't.

Devaluation of currency accounts for the slide to 1 yen = 1 US cent.

I have some Japanese silver from the late 50's, 100 Yen coins with .0926 ounces of silver, slightly more than a US dime of the same period, .0723 but less than a quarter at .1808.
