Tutorial on RPM's (Repunched Mintmarks)


Let's take a look at the RPM's of the early 1980's. Using your(the OP's) coin as the example, notice the symmetrical size, shape and depth. No normal indications of a repunched mint mark.


Now, just what is a "RPM", repunched mintmark? It is exactly as is written, a re-punching of an original indention. This may be indicated by a lateral shift, with a portion of a second punching shown inside or outside the Primary mark. It could be a twisting, rotation of the second punch which shows as splits in the corners of a mintmark on the area called a "Serif" Some split serifs are quite bold and noticeable, other fainter. Not always on RPM's do you find an appreciable increase in size, it is slight at times. Study this plate of actual mintmarks from 1981 and 1982. This is what you look for.
