I am just curious what exactly this copper color that covers part of the coin is and what causes it. If memory serves correct, a 1964-D Roosevelt dime should be 90% silver and was the last year that silver was used in it. Also, it is not just on the very outside surface, if you look at the rim, it goes about halfway into the coin, as if you were looking at a modern Roosevelt dime. As always, any input is greatly appreciated. I am really enjoying this community!

Trace metals in the silver can tone to all sorts of interesting colors. Also, the coin surface can be exposed to all manner of environmental molecules as it tones over time.

thank you so much for everyone's great input, I am very glad I chose to join this community of enthusiasts! I also have another 1964-D Roosevelt dime With similar color but in just a few spots. In addition to that which confuses me a bit because of one of the responses is that I'll also have a.1968-D Roosevelt dime which is composed of Copper-Nickle Plated Copper As Roosevelt dimes no longer contained silver after 1964 unless you got a lucky 1965 silver. I have some pictures Of both these other coins.
