Pre 1921 Canada Large Cents Question

santafeboy Pillar of the Community United States 593 Posts	Posted 11/18/2011 7:19 pm In 1920 when the mint switched to the small cents as the large 1 cent coins came into banks where they withdrawn and sent to the mint for melting?.Any idea how long the 2 coin types circulated together? I never received one of these in change as a boy in the 1960s, however I did ocassionally receive Victoria,Edward and George V 10,25 and 50 cents coins in common circulation. George VI coins at this time ( early 1960s ) were every day circulating coins.My same question also applies to the pre 1922 Canada small silver 5 cent coins Report this Post to the Staff

Smallcentguy Pillar of the Community Canada 1984 Posts	Posted 11/18/2011 10:21 pm I have no idea. But when I was a paper boy in the early 70s, no half dollars of any kind really circulated. I never saw a Vicky coin in ciculation. I would occasionally get a George V or Edward dime or quarter. I never found a circulating pre 36 cent or nickel for some reason. But I did find a 1876 cent on a driveway on Coooper St. in Ottawa after a verandah was ripped down. I also found a 1914 quarter in Meech Lake plus a 34 cent on the beach at Constance Bay. All in awful shape....still have them all! Report this Post to the Staff
west- canuk Valued Member Canada 497 Posts	Posted 11/18/2011 11:41 pm My father, born in 1928, had a lot of large cents he collected as a kid, told me that at school large cents were still around but getting tougher to find, the kids that had them wanted 2 small cents for 1 large cent since they were twice as large. 1945V Valued Member Canada 386 Posts	Posted 11/19/2011 1:14 pm I remember another poster mentioning that he saw them in circulation up until the late 1940s early 1950s. I once found a 1906 Edward VII large cent in a large artifical lake that was drained for repairs. The date was almost illegable due to the abrasive effect of being underwater for probably 80 years or more. I also found a 1920 large cent in VF condition while metal detecting in my backyard.
