hello, from va. I need a little help. found a 1983 d penny, it looks just like a steel penny, but a magnet won,t stick to it. also it has a knife scratch into the metal, and it,s not copper inside. also I have a penny (not wheat) looks like copper thats a little more than half blank//you can see half of lincolns head and shoulders,,the word liberty,, at the top the word (in) and on the back, the word united / st and almost half the building plus two letters O N are they worth anything? thanks rick  |

 to CCF.We would need photos to help you but the 1983-D sounds like it could be an unplated error. 1983 LMC's are made of copper plated zinc so the inside of it would look silvery/gray when scratched. The other coin we would really need a good photo of to help. John1  Edited by John1

Aye sounds like it's either no plating, or the copper playing plating wore off and the zinc oxidized a bit to look more "steely." I have a few of these that range from shiny zinc to black.

The second cent sounds like an off-center strike. The first cent could be an unplated cent, or a cent that has had the copper plating removed post strike, or a scratched cent that has been plated post mint. No way to tell without good pictures and it may have to be examined in person by a knowledgeable error collector.

Welcome.
Make sure you weigh all 1983 pennies. Normal weight is 2.5g (copper/zinc). If you find one that weighs 3.1g (copper only, extremely rare), then that could be Big Bucks. Good Luck.
