It's been >18 months since this one last made an appearance, so I think it's OK for me to post one of my absolute favorite coins.
The coin was struck by Mexico from 1910 to 1914. It was the first commemorative coin of Mexico, marking the centennial of the country's War for Independence. Upon its launch, the coin marked the centennial of the revolt in 1810 that ultimately led to Mexico's independence in 1821.
The official obverse of the coin presents the National Arms of Mexico which includes an eagle, perched on a cactus plant, holding a snake in its beak; most collectors/grading services consider this side to be the reverse. The true reverse design depicts an allegorical figure of
Liberty on horseback (riding side saddle); she is holding a torch aloft in her raised left hand while in her right is seen an oak branch. In the background is seen a rising sun with rays that extend across the design. The coin was designed by Charles Pillet.
