My girlfriend posted this photo to my Facebook page. Good deal?  At today's silver exchange rate ($31.46 per ounce) not really! It would run you $4.55 per gallon! Might try to pay with a few of those "dolllar" coins, though. Edited by copper nickel daddy

If you think about it there are a lot of people that have no idea of the value of coins. Not just for Silver, but rare dates. So this idea if someone had a jar, can, box of old coins laying around waiting for a rainy day, they may just pull into that station and pay with those old coins.
Imagine getting a 1894S Dime, with a pile of Sitting Liberty Dimes to pay for that gas.

This was perfect timing. On the way home from work Friday afternoon I was going to stop at my usual gas station to fill up. Well, the place was packed so I went to the station on the next corner. The sign said $3.69/ gal. I pushed the button to select regular unleaded and had to double take the price on the pump. It read $2.69/gal. So I filled the tank (unfortunately only needed 12. something gallons)  |

Come to Europe - here it's only 1.65 or so (I'm in DE). Nah, wait. That is euro per liter. Well, I now have a credit card that gives a whopping 3% rebate ... But that sign in the initial post I like. :)

Say you have a car made in 1957. Gas was 25 cents a gallon average when the car was new. Using the Consumer Price Indexes, that would be about $2 a gallon in today's money. But... Every quarter in circulation back in 1957 was 90% silver. Said Quarters now have $5.61 spot value @ $31.00/oz. Since 90% Silver coins (and $1 Silver Certificate Notes) were the default methods of payment in 1957, buyers were paying "$5.61 a gallon" in today's silver price.  The "fair price" for gas in 90% Silver would be 18 cents/gallon (assuming gas is $4/gallon in fiat money). Quote:

One of my cars is a 1967 and it gets a whpping 7 to 9 miles to the gallon. And it can only run on the highest octane which was about $0.35/gallon then. Quote: Picture filling this thing up with todays prices. |
