I recently consolidated some of my half dollar collection, and the result is that I have an empty album.
My empty album is a "Library of Coins" blank half dollar album, with 48 holes.
Seeing as I have an illness, I need to do something with this book! I have a couple thoughts, but I was curious what YOU would do if you had this "problem"

Is there any other answer than "fill it"

16 years of Philadelphia Franklin halves...G....AU....MS = 48 holes filled. All different Franklins mint marks and proofs should fill 45 holes I believe. Go through the decades, try to get 2 coins from every decade.

haha, no, not technically any other answer than "fill it", but I am curious as to what you would fill it with! akane17, its a good idea and I would do it, but I already have 2 franklin albums. i have been getting a few Barber halves at a local shop for melt. would a circulated barber half collection peak anyones interest? as if theres anything besides a circulated barber half!

Well, for me it's obvious. Kennedy halves, 1964 to date. Should be exactly 48 coins from 1964 to 2012 including the bicentennial (as they didn't make a 1975 half). For a more serious challenge, try getting the same set but in proof (should be doable in principle but I'm not sure if the album is up to the task of holding/preserving proofs).

The easy answer is to start upgrading the main album and put the downgrades in the empty one. Just Carl can tell you how it works.

Library of Coins albums sell fairly well on ebay....so I'd have the wife sell it & use the money towards a coin I wanted/needed.

The Kennedy idea by January1may seems like a fairly easy collection to start up but then you run into the issue of the 2013 Kennedy and next year you will be in the same spot all over again.

Just Carl can tell you how it works. Horribly true. It is sort of an illness. A long, long time ago I started a few Albums. As one filled, I acquired another Album of the same thing. The first became #1 and the other #2. All the better coins went to #1. This went on and on and on with Album after Album with progressively better coins in #1 and downward to #2, #3, #4 and on and on. As a few Examples I now am stuck with 12 Mercury dime Albums, 10 Lincoln Cent Albums, 8 Indian Head cent Albums, etc. My process is as I move a coin out of the last Album, it goes into a 2x2 and then into a 2 row, Whitman cardboard box. Eventually all those accumulate to the point of making another Album which I tend to do. This system is close to a possible Memtal problem since there is no end in sight or possible untii I have all the coins ever minted.

stick 2-3 Kennedys and 2-3 franklins in it and take it down to the local coin shop. Tell the dealer that you want to raffle it off to a young collector to help "pay it forward." You will be helping to keep the hobby alive and make some kids day!
Not many collectors are generous enough to think about helping out the next generation of young collectors.

You already have a Library of Coins album, what about turning it into a Library of World coins. There are a number of coins from around the world that would fit into album.
Part of the fun would be finding the coins that fit and that are of interest to you. This way it would be recycled and they coins are different and you wouldn't be limited to just one country.

Andrew289, thats a great idea and I will not rule it out. Very thoughtful and it really would be great to keep some kids fire burning. I feel selfish now for coming up with an idea. I have a few Barber halves I got for melt. I looked at the mintages and there are 24 dates where barbers were minted... if my math is correct, thats exactly half of 48! I think I will do a 24 coin date set of circulated, bottom of the barrell barbers! then maybe for the next 24 holes, do either a grade higher or a different mint nark! And... now I am very keen on the idea Andrew298 had. I might just think about a way to do that with another album I have laying around.

Another good idea, ghostrider. I like how everyone is looking outside of the box here.
