Many, many years ago I used to get one once in a blue moon. But none in the last twenty or so years.

I've never gotten one in my own change, but a guy at work needed a dollar for a soda and only had 30 cents. I traded him the dollar and told him not to worry about it, and I looked at the change he handed me and there was a 44d nickel. Good karma or something.

1964 is everywhere.

If they didn't have metal value, I'd pave my driveway with them. I could shovel the '64's from my 55-gallon drum
into a wheelbarrow, pour them onto the hot asphalt and level them out with a shovel...

I used to find those and Buffalos in my change when I was a kid... (70s & 80s).
It has been at least 5 years since I found a War Nickel in my change though.
(I don't roll hunt.) So they are drying up. I don't think I have found a Buffalo
since before my oldest son was born... (1991)

Heck, up into the 80s, steel cents and 90% coins were fairly common in pocket change.
(Common as in you could find a small number inside a year's time.)

The only thing remotely close that I still find in change regularly are Wheats.

I have received a grand total of one from circulation in change, and quite a few from roll hunting. They're almost always worn nearly slick.

I get tired of finding even the BU 63/64's, which is sad. Every time I get a shiny one I think to myself "Self, you're going to upgrade your '64". And it's never noticeably better than what I already have.

How well I know that feeling... :)

Not yet...

And I think more nickels were made in 1964 then any other year in the history of the nickel (started in 1866)
