From what I can see , NICE FIND on a difficult coin to locate, ........Looks like the clear "S" compared to the "blob" S.

The 1981-S Type II is a proof-only variety, you have a business strike which was only issued in Mint Sets. The business strikes only had one mintmark so you have a normal 1981-S SBA. The Clear S and Filled S terms apply much better to the 1979 varieties but the difference is more subtle for the 1981 proofs. The 1979-S Type II(Clear S)mintmark is identical to the 1981-S Type I(Filled S) mintmark, hence the reason why "Clear" and "Filled" are illogical for 1981. The 1981-S Type II features large bulbous serifs with round center loops while the Type I has small rounded serifs and oval openings.

Bob, I believe you are correct, I thought the 1981 coin came in 3 mint marks with the business strikes? The things I forgot! :(

Nice find ! I also save all the SBA S mm that I found , I think its cool coins with S mm non proofs dated 79 and after ! I remember years ago when I was so broke that I spend a ike S mm that was no proof , today after learned about coins I think it was a valueable error but is too late !

Quote: I thought the 1981 coin came in 3 mint marks with the business strikes? It does, Bob's comment "The business strikes only had one mintmark so you have a normal 1981-S SBA." meant that there was only one version of the S mintmark. They do come with P and D mintmarks as well.

Yes, I meant only one version of the S mintmark on business strikes The business strike mintmarks for the 1979 and 1981 are both the Type 1 mintmarks for the respective years.

Any SBA found that is not a 1979-P or 1979-D is a very nice find.

The "Tooth Fairy" left some dollar coins for my son last night....some presidentials and 2 SBAs. I took a closer look and one of the SBA's was an uncirculated 1979-P "wide rim" or "near date" variety.

Maybe someone can help me out. I have a 1979 Proof set with quite a few 'clear S'. Penny, SBA, etc. Not the Kennedy though. I have a 1981 set but can't really tell if it's type I or type II. After seeing some pictures, I am even more confused. From what I read, 1981 SBA's 'clear s' doesn't necessarily mean it's a Type II. Think it has something to do with having a rounder 'S' like an 8, as opposed to a "boxy" harder or more like 90 degree angles or something. But, alas I'm a newb and can't get good macro pics without my hands moving to much, but that's another topic. Is the description of 1981 SBA accurate? Hate to send it off to be graded and find it's a type I because I was stupid.

The vast majority of the '81-S $1's went into the regular mint set. There was also a tiny number (10,000?) that went into a special souvenir set of three SBA's. Additionally several dozens of bags of these were sold to dealers in 1982 since they were overruns for the mint sets and presumably returned mint sets. There were also a substantial number of unsold mint sets and some of these probably went into bags sold to dealers but there were a few released to "circulation". Ironically the other coins from the dismantled 1981 mint sets were mixed in with 1982 coinage. It's possible that someone is sitting on what he thinks is a bag of valuable '82 coins and most are actually 1981. Of course so few coins were set aside in those days that this is improbable.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
