At a recent country sale I bought 2 specimens of 1887 short currency sets (not in cases) plus extra young head sixpences and threepences.
The quality of most of the coins is unbelievably good.

I paid about half catalogue price and thought I did well, but now I'm not so sure.

I'll post photos of each in separate posts.

these are often found in higher grades, as they were withdrawn before the year was over, and replaced with the Type 3 sixpence.
So, a lot of people seem to have put them aside (hoarded) at that time, and they come onto the market a century later in near-unc condition.

When these coins were first issued, the reverse was completely different from previous 6d coins. Some people gold-plated them and passed them off as half-sovereigns. ( half-sovereign = 10 shillings = 120d, 20 times more than the value of the coin). This is why they were withdrawn so quickly.

Yours looks genuine to me.
