At a recent country sale I bought 2 specimens of 1887 short currency sets (not in cases) plus extra young head sixpences and threepences.

The quality of most of the coins is unbelievably good.

I paid about half catalogue price and thought I did well, but now I'm not so sure.

I'll post photos of each in separate posts.

Here's one of the crowns:

Using a Myco electronic balance the weight is 28.38 grams.

BostonJo: to the CCF!

From the pictures they look perfectly good to me, and the weight is perfectly good as well.

You do not mention how much you paid, but I will agree with you anyway. Half cat. for coins in this condition, ex sets, is very good.

The 1887 short currency proof set Crown to Threepence is listed in
Coincraft's 1998 catalogue at 1,300 pounds.

I think that you may be experiencing some withdrawal symptoms because of the absolute amount paid. I have that problem occasionally myself. Don't worry about it; it will wear off. Just enjoy their ownership!

If they are uncased, it may be worthwhile hunting around for some screw capsules for them (ex modern proof sets), from a dealer. Quite often, these are left overs after breaking up modern proof sets. Have a 'phone around for them.

I have a pair of gold 1937 proof Five and Two Pounds coins in screw capsules, in a home made modified ex proof set case. The protection and presentation gained is well worth the effort.

It looks good to me, 173,581 minted and 1,084 proofs minted also... it should measure 38mm

I haven't got one of these in my collection but I would like to have its a nice addition :)
