Is This A Genuine 1887 British Garter Sixpence ?

BostonJo New Member United Kingdom 33 Posts	Posted 09/01/2012 9:38 pm At a recent country sale I bought 2 specimens of 1887 short currency sets (not in cases) plus extra young head sixpences and threepences. The quality of most of the coins is unbelievably good. I paid about half catalogue price and thought I did well, but now I'm not so sure. I'll post photos of each in separate posts. So, a lot of people seem to have put them aside (hoarded) at that time, and they come onto the market a century later in near-unc condition. Report this Post to the Staff
Anaximander Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 709 Posts	Posted 09/02/2012 2:44 pm When these coins were first issued, the reverse was completely different from previous 6d coins. Some people gold-plated them and passed them off as half-sovereigns. ( half-sovereign = 10 shillings = 120d, 20 times more than the value of the coin). This is why they were withdrawn so quickly.
