I tried to look for this particular question but I could not seem to find it asked this way.

I read about the Acetone,(which I'm going to try for some of my silver) and the effect it could have on copper.

My question is I have a few horrible looking Indian heads and want to clean them (the bad way) just to see how clean I can get them.

I read about vinegar etc, but was wondering of what was the best (worst) way to clean a penny?

Once again, I'm not concerned about taking a coat of metal off, just for my own amusement,(ugh that's sad) to see how clean and shiny I can get it.

These beat up IH's are probably worth .01 in their condition anyway.
Thanks
MM

I still would never clean a coin, but that is just MHO..... Where did you hear acetone is harmful to copper? As long as you use 100% pure acetone, not nail polish remover, your fine, it will not harm the copper. I found that toilet bowl cleaner works well. In my experiences, vinegar does not work.... I will pay you 2 cents a piece for those Indians, seriously. :D

Thanks. I only have a few that are in horrible shape. So I was just curious to see how shiny I can get them. They are pretty well dented up as well. Basically, nearly everything that can be wrong with a coin, is wrong with these coins.

I probably will just try it the the worst one I have and that's it. I paid nothing for it.

For the acetone, I was reading some posts on here, not necessarily where a copper coin could be damaged by it, but could "potentially" have the color altered. Then I was also reading other posts where it was stated there would be no problems.

On another note, I have found 3 decent looking IH during my CRHs. 1900, 1905, 1908. along with 14 in the teens and 1955 S that looks brand new. (not in the same box of course) Probably in about $1200 worth of pennies.

I started originally about a year ago, but stopped. I just started up again. My fiance thinks I'm nuts. I'm selling the 59-82's on ebay, for lack of a better outlet. The return isn't great, but it pays for everything I keep + some extra spending $$$.

I have another $400 worth of pennies to pick up Friday or Sat and my first $500 box of half dollars.

The good part is I've actually got a number of banks I'm using between my dump banks and my pick up banks and at each one, there isn't a single person doing a CRHing. Hopefully, that helps my chances with the half dollars a bit.

Helzel, what would you suggest I do with this? Almost all the old coppers I find look like this...is it something you'd want in your collection?

Vinegar alone is not enough. Use 1/4 cup white vinegar with one teaspoon salt. The acidic mixture will strip the copper oxide off the coin and leave it shiny. I would NEVER recommmend doing this with a collectible coin.

Vinegar will give it a coppery colour again but it will be dull and lifeless and more like an orangy salmon colour than anything original. Acetone has never changed the colour of a coin in the hundreds of times I've used it.

A brass cleaning product will give it a 'shine' but it wont resemble anything like lustre and will look pretty awful really.

If youre doing it for fun on worthless coins then experiment a bit with different things. Otherwise i'd leave them as is, they are sure to be more appealing even darkly toned and worn than they would be harshly cleaned.
