If you could go back in time...to March 1964. That's when the law changed. I think you could still redeem them up until 1969. I remember considering it but I wanted to keep my one and only silver certificate. I was only a kid and would have had to get somebody to drive me to the bank....probably wouldn't have happened.
But the dollar is a leagal document and within the 4 corners of that document it states "One Dollar in Silver Payable to the bearer on demand." I say we file a class action suit!
If your bank is like my old bank, yes. it had a display case set up inside with ASE's and other silver and gold coins. I remember begging my mom to get one of them every time we went to the bank. Anyhow, give them 30-40 silver certificates and they'll give you an ounce of silver.
Alas, an Act of Congress invalidated the redemption clause, & there's nothing you can do against that. Constitutional challenges against monetary legislation have not been entertained for a long time.
