Ten Dollar Bill (Early 1900's) Symbolism Question

I assume the figure is Liberty but cannot tell what the object is that's being held high in the hand of the raised left arm of the figure. Does anyone know what that is, or what it symbolizes? The theme is Columbia walking between two pillars presenting America's fruits of labor to the rest of the world. I believe she is holding wheat stalks or grain of some type. They are seen also on the Spanish Milled Dollar, and it's where the dollar sign comes from - a sash (saying PLUS ULTRA, And more/beyond, think of Buzz Lightyear) draped around the Pillars of Hercules as seen also on the Spanish coat of arms. hurleycoins New Member United States 10 Posts	Posted 12/31/2013 11:35 am Your avatar is an image of Lady Liberty, featured on the Series of 1901 $10 note, known by collectors as the "Bison Note". Upon close examination of the example in my inventory, I can see that Liberty is holding merely a stalk of wheat, nothing symbolic of anything but agriculture, or so I believe. Beside her on both sides are pillars that express, I believe, Europe and Asia. Report this Post to the Staff
