Does anyone know what would cause these black spots on proof coins? They were taken from proof sets with white cotton gloves and placed in mylar 2x2's which were put in 3 ring binder pages. I got USB microscope and was going back through taking some new pictures.
Those look like carbon spots to me. I have a few (U.S.) coins I've never taken out of the mint packaging that have these spots of them. One on a 2014 ATB silver quarter set I purchased only a few weeks ago. This tells me it must be something with the minting process that causes the problem, or perhaps the environment they are stored in. While my experience is with U.S. proof coins I suspect it is applicable to Canadian coins also.
I just had 2 1/2 Oz 2004 Arctic fox coins, I noticed these little black spots on. They were always in a capsule or a cardboard flip. I found it vary annoying. I'm going to need to go back over my photos and check if they were on my photos.
