Quote: I don't think you have enough options... I too think you could have added about 100 more items. For example why not replace the Half with a $0.49 cent coin?

If only coins mattered and not events surrounding their creating... halves should exist. Romans did a lot right and roman numerals are still used for a reason. That being said I voted the thing about $1 coins should have their place in cash registers. coins are just better than bills for small purchases. they are easier to deal with than funbling fo 3 or 4 bills static clinging to each other with the aid of Vanderwahl's force! Back to the Romans, 1, 5, 10, 50, 100; then continue. it is really simple. Why bills and coins dont come in the same denominations always confused me. $20 vs 25 c now the Kennedy halves are the reason halves no longer circulate because memorabilia collectors from the time ceasing to use them and businesses no longer wanting empty space int heir drawers. by the time clad came around it was too late for the half mass use. That could change if after the ATB the Mint pauses using quarters and issues halves. same metals, same amount, same weight for same face... But I am impartial because I like coins over bills, because you can wash coins. might be bad for collection, but ever had a perfumed or stinky bill that you carry around and that smell stays with you for a LONG time even after washing the clothes it was in? Coins, you wash em off, and you're done! Old lady handbag and French harlot smells on bills make me sick every time!

Quote:BamaBlue Posted - Yesterday 10:24 am -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I hold the opinion that no politician should be on U.S. Currency. The decision to issue a Kennedy half was based on emotion and the need to 'do something.' The use of political figures, or politically motivated figures (Susan B. Anthony) has reduced coins to simple currency and has taken away the art and beauty of the coin design... again, this is my opinion.

I think a better tribute would have been to make the 64 Kennedy a 1 year type, then switch back to the Franklin design.

I think it was mostly inflation that did in the half dollar.
Half dollars never had as much velocity as quarters. Mostly you received quarters in change unless the total was something like $3.55 and then you'd likely get a half and a nickel. At that time anything you wanted from vending machines could be had for nickels and dimes though a pack of cigarettes cost 20 or 25 cents.
But there was a lot of inflation and suddenly these things usually required "real money" like quarters and the machines didn't accept half dollars. Many times the bank would give me a half dollar and I'd hand it back to get quarters. The banks got out of the habit of even offering half dollars and the denomination gradually failed until it was hardly used at all after 1980.
A half dollar was really just two quarters and took up no more or less spoace or weight. It saved half a moment in making change but in light of its uselessness in making vending purchases this simply was insufficient justification. The government should have withdrawn it as soon as it was seen that it was no longer a useful denomination which was quite obvious by late 1969.
There was actually little hoarding of the silver clad issues because people considered it debased junk. Some were hoarded by Kennedy fans but this had little or no effect on the outcome. If the coins circulated the mint would have had to make a few more.
If you could buy cigarettes now from a machine you'd need a whole roll of quarters instead of two dimes.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I like the Kennedy half. The design is one of the most striking of all our modern coins. It's much more satisfying to look at than the Franklin. I also like the larger, heavier coins. It makes it feel like you're really spending money.

I agree with jpsned, the Kennedy half is a visually striking coin, much more so than any of the other coins since the 60's. I also think that real people should not be on coins in a democracy. It is fine for a monarchy to have images of the monarch, but in a democracy there should be more abstract images, like the various Liberty designs (IH Cent, SLQ, Mercury dime etc.)

The FHD was half-way into its lifecycle when Kennedy was assassinated. I think the KHD was a proper way to commemorate our fallen President, after all Franklin is on the $100 note. Had Kennedy not have been assassinated the FHD would have run its course. Maybe at that time the half dollar could have been retired totally or would it be featuring another face by now. I do love the Kennedy half. I probably have more Kennedy's than any other coin in my collection. But I feel it is time to retire the KHD in 2015 when the Kennedy Presidential dollar is released. I know this might not be popular, but I feel Ronald Reagan should be the next face on the next US Half Dollar. He's not perfect, but his record speaks for itself. Happy Easter!

Kennedy halves - I like the looks. He was a great man as far as politics goes. The rest of his life I will not commnet on (or did I just do that?). He wanted to oust the power of the fed and this likely got him killed (the red seal notes - blue too right?). I like the Kennedy errors (great looking DDOs on some of the 70s - no magnifying glass needed). I also cannot get over the looks of the 1998-S matte proof - simply beautiful! As to Reagan on a coin, I care not what the media propagates. The actual facts when researched (yes, I have - from both sides), show he was an amazing man for America. Although the media likes to say Clinton was the reason for Reagan's success, I find it interesting that JFK and Reagan's economic plans were about identical at the roots - Clinton's the opposite - and Clinton claimed to be just like JFK (listen to the speeches - yes I have!). Clinton was Obama the first - 'nuff said. So I most certainly would like to see a Reagan half as long as the effigy is done well. I am also looking forward to the JFK dollar coin. I only have Presidential dollars of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Teddy (for his early years), and am looking forward to Ike, JFK, and Reagan (if they get that far).
