I was at my LCS yesterday and they had an 1808 Half Cent; a nice, solid G-4 coin. As I looked at the obverse and then flipped the coin top-to-bottom, the reverse was upsidedown (medal alignment) vs. right-side up (coin alignment).
I suspect this may be fairly common for this early era of coinage but wanted to see what some others thought because this is more than just a die rotation: the reverse is rotated exactly 180 degrees from what would be expected.
The shop is asking $55 and I was thinking about picking it up.
Regarding the rotation, there are estimated to be between 81 and 200 surviving 1808 Half Cents with rotations between 90 and 180 degrees. Despite the low mintage, there is even lower demand, so it shouldn't garner much of a premium.
just saw that were a dozen 1808 Half Cents with rotations sold on ebay in the past month, in addition to the ones listed now. Check out the final sales price to help yourself tell if the coin is a good deal or not.
