1808 Half Cent With Medal Alignment?

chetzler Valued Member United States 206 Posts	Posted 05/23/2014 3:13 pm I was at my LCS yesterday and they had an 1808 Half Cent; a nice, solid G-4 coin. As I looked at the obverse and then flipped the coin top-to-bottom, the reverse was upsidedown (medal alignment) vs. right-side up (coin alignment). I suspect this may be fairly common for this early era of coinage but wanted to see what some others thought because this is more than just a die rotation: the reverse is rotated exactly 180 degrees from what would be expected. The shop is asking $55 and I was thinking about picking it up. Thanks, -Chris Report this Post to the Staff

robbudo Pillar of the Community United States 2759 Posts	Posted 05/23/2014 10:43 pm Regarding the rotation, there are estimated to be between 81 and 200 surviving 1808 Half Cents with rotations between 90 and 180 degrees. Despite the low mintage, there is even lower demand, so it shouldn't garner much of a premium. Report this Post to the Staff
