Black Stuff On Coin Where The 2x2 Was Ripped.

buddy16cat Pillar of the Community United States 1536 Posts	Posted 06/23/2014 2:47 pm I got this coin in a lot. There was a tear in the 2X2 which resulted in black stuff on the coin it appears. You think a soak in distilled water and acetone will take it off? If not, I would rather not go through it. I thought it was tarnish but appears though it could be gunk. A store by me has some carelessly treated 2x2s and all the once-white silver coins inside have really ugly spots on them where the plastic ripped and the air came through. buddy16cat Pillar of the Community United States 1536 Posts	Posted 06/23/2014 3:06 pm Yes, it appears storage makes the difference. One of my Barber dimes was white face now it is turning rainbow. I think I should stick it in an airtight now to keep that. The 2x2 was old that this coin was in and had a big tear. Report this Post to the Staff

Chute72 Pillar of the Community United States 1314 Posts	Posted 06/25/2014 4:19 pm I live along the Wisconsin River. Many paper mills. They use chemicals, notably sulfur dioxide. Pierce a 2x2 and you will get a black spot. Especially on silver. For home containment, I use air tight ammo cans. Report this Post to the Staff
