Quote: This century would see the last gasp of the Roman Empire. As Constantinople would be sacked in the 1200s and the Empire split by the "latins".
You forgot its continuation (till 1261) as the Empire of Nicaea The Roman Empire permanently snuffed it over 200 years later after a slow, slow death. At least this is how I see things. Quote: because who will be up at midnight Maybe people on the opposite side of the world?

What I meant ( my fault for not clarifying) about last gasp was the Eastern Empire's ability to defend it self and go on the offensive. After the sack of Constantinople the Empire was gutted, and for the most part it could not defend itself ( besides sieges of fortified cities) and go on the offensive. Thanks for keeping me on my toes and making sure I don't go soft VK! .

On that I agree with you of course After 1204, the empire was on a terminal decline. There would be no resurgence for the Byzantines.

My next one isn't until the 1160's,but I have a bid on a Stephen I Hungarian denar that ends Thursday afternoon. It will be close, but I should get it in time for 991-1000.
